It reduces the inter-winding capacitance for higher output 
potential.  This was old school idea not used much anymore.  Usually 
of no value unless you need extra HV output but with plasma (long 
sparks) output close winding it where it's at.  Use height/dia ratio 
of 4.5:1 or 5:1 for most coils and plan on dividing the winding 
length by 1,400 (for 1,400 turns on the coil) and it will work great.
