Re: Maxwell capacitor 35Kv 0.03uf

I think these are the caps that go up on ebay every now and then for $110ish. These work well for 12/120 nst's or a pt, but can't take the 15kV ones very long (gave up after making $200+ in paperweights). So the voltage rating is pretty much maxed (unlike 942c's), but the other ratings are very conservative. For 18J, these pack a heck of a punch. Before I got my x-ray tranny for a jacob's ladder I was using a 9/60 nst with one of these in series with the sec. to cancel out some of the shunts without depotting (8-10" fat arcs, but limited to 30 sec runs , nst was quite hot at that point).Went to discharge the cap after a run with a 2-foot piece of hv wire and had a 12" blue fireball that sounded like a gunshot or firecracker (made my ears ring). Didn't explode the entire wire luckily, just 1"or so near the 2nd contact point (had it in my hand). Not sure I wanna try that at the full 18J since that was no more than 3.3J.

Voltage reversals typical in Tesla circuits 90-95%. This cap is only rated for max of 50% and average of 15% --- it would be pushed very hard if used in a Tesla oscillator circuit.

The spec sheet for this capacitor is available on my web page:

What is the pulse duty rating for this cap?
