ease of assembly and cost. The (small) eddy currents caused by the weld seam will cost about .1-.5 % effieciency, not much on small (<1kva, eg: mot) transformers that are only 80-90% efficient to begin with.

I have come across several misc high voltage transformers with a thin welded
stripe shorting all the laminations together.  Why would the manufacturer do
this since it will cause eddy currents? These transformers also had
(coincidently?) magnetic shunts.
