Original poster: syd <tesla@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>Especially in the case of high voltage transformers they will sometimes center tap the windings and tie that to both the core and ground. That way the innermost windings can be wound close to the core with less capacitve coupling. The thin welded strip would have eddy currents within itself, but since it is a thin stip (like a lamination) they aren't damagingly large.

Original poster: norman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I have come across several misc high voltage transformers with a thin welded stripe shorting all the laminations together. Why would the manufacturer do this since it will cause eddy currents? These transformers also had (coincidently?) magnetic shunts.
