i think that unless you have the circuit tuned very closely to the
tank circuits resonant frequency (or even fractions of it like 1/2
1/4 1/8 etc). if you dont you get voltage spikes and bizzare
waveforms (i think).

Ironic, I was thinking of doing the same thing 4 days
ago(havent got around to it quite yet). I was
planning on using a timer circut with pulse width
ajustment, along with some big MOSFET's.
Should work in theory, if you get everything right.
