Re: Splicing Magnet Wire

Sometime hard to do "nicely" Mike.

I've done this a few times early on. I first tinned both wires with solder. Then simply held the new wire in place and heated the joint (trying to maintain a steady hand by resting my outer palm edge against the coil). If you do a lot of soldering, you get good at this. If not, well, you eventually learn the technique (using a decent soldering station certainly helps as you can set the temp). Something like a Radio Shack plug and go iron isn't the best to use, but will do the job (I would first get it right on the work bench with a scrap piece).

Take care,
Bart

I know this has been discussed before, but need details. Unfortunately my new 6" coil (producing 7 foot discharges) , blew a hole in the secondary wire about 5' up from the bottom. I unrolled the wire past the burn, scotchbrighted/exacto knifed the carbon from the form. I sanded a beveled edge on the wire, and tinned it. Now I want to join this with a new wire to re-wind to the original bottom point. My question, is how to hold the 2 pieces of wire in alighnment while soldering? This seems very dificult. Not only from a placement point of view, but from a standpoint of properly heating the junction. As always your helpmis much apreciated
