If i were to do this (for reproduction purposes) my choice of wood 
would be
spruce or similar softwood  <snip>
   
  I have no idea if it would be good for coiling,  but aspen is a remarkable wood for many things.   It is very easy to work and does not crack/split when it's dried.   I doubt Tesla ever investigated it's properties due to the total lack of information regarding it.   I don't recall ever seeing aspen the times I've been to Colorado Springs, so I just don't know.   All I do know is that it would sure look nice.
