I am not sure in your case but what I would do is check the tuning again and
make sure you are tuned correctly. I have never heard them do that near the
discharge terminal but I have heard them do it in and around the capacitor
bank if the tuning is off.  I had one do that around the solder connections
of the cap bank ( could not tell exactly where no damage) and it did not
hurt anything, I was doing some weird testing and detuned intentionally and
got it to pop.

Anybody know what would cause a loud pop or snap every few
seconds?  Can't locate it exactly but it sounds like it's coming from
around the top of the secondary closer to the toroid. I see no racing
arc's etc. The sound doesn't seem to be related to the streamers.
