If the knee is abrupt does the current go to infinity when the saturation point is reached or do things still behave rationally.
It would, but for the fact that you use the SR in series with a load, and the load limits the current.
Also, it seems like saturation aided by the DC current will occur in one AC direction only. Not sure what the implications are.
That is true, and it explains why saturable reactors need two magnetic paths biased in opposite directions. For example Carl Litton's two MOTs. Each MOT handled one half of the AC waveform.
