RE: Isolated FET/IGBT Pulse Driver for HV Applications ...
Original poster: "Mccauley, Daniel H" <daniel.h.mccauley@xxxxxxxx>
I've already done extensive simulation and started some benchtests using
this circuit. The IRF540 / IRF9540 are not drop in replacements for the
zetex parts specified, in particular the ones on the primary side of the
transformer. The circuit is a bit more complex than meets the eye, and
components, in particular the MOSFETs, have to be chosen correctly for
it
to work. Also, for SSTC use, many components / values including the
transformer need to be changed from the original schematic.
Although the circuit works quite well, i'm not convinced it will provide
any benefit over the existing standard gate drive circuit currently in
use. All
the idea is novel and the power consumption is quite small, it is
difficult to provide the necessary current to charge the gates up
quickly, so the circuit is fairly slow when driving large IGBTs such as
the 40N60's etc...
I'm presently evaluating several types of gate drive circuits which will
be
included in my new book, "DRRSTC : Building the Modern Day Tesla Coil"
in a dedicated chapter, so look for this circuit to be presented,
tested, and modified to work with the 40N60 type IGBTs.

Hi Dave,
The zetex FETs are not available in my place. Can I replace those
FETs with IRF540 or IRF9540 ? Those transistors are easily available
in my place.
Has anyone tried the same circuit using some other FETs ?
Thanks and regards,
Rajesh.
