There are index files and I reduced the size of the pictures to about 10% of the size they were.

I hate to waste bandwidth on this - but I agree. I have a slow modem connection and waited for a few minutes and the picture had not opened up yet. I tried a smaller file and had the same problem. I left the site without viewing any of the pictures.
