Assuming 'something' was detected, i wonder if it was 'standing waves'?
It occurs to me that the indications for standing waves would, I think,
be largely mimicked by detecting transmissions that go All The Way Round.
Such occurs with SW, on varying freqs, depending on time of day/year, etc,
sometimes called 'long path'.
It was quite mystifying when first heard (an echo chamber effect), and not
'grasped' until ca 1935(?). (I've a book, somewhere....)
