I know the arguments for this, however the first pic out of 10,000 when you google for 'Tesla coil' images has it in series.... By the way why is a spark gap in this beginners SSTC anyway? Perhaps SGTC?

Always in parallel --- helps reduce spikes.

I just thought of another question I should have asked. Which is better, the schematic where the spark gap is parallel to or in series with the primary coil?
