Dave,
For a quick cheap method of turning on/off Relays and monitoring
relay status take a look at NCD http://www.controlanything.com/ they do a
range of serial rs 232 devices that are relatively cheap, and have a range
of control drives (FET, Relay etc) and input devices (opto'd & analogue)
which will work fine for low speed (> 1/10 Sec) control.
The best thing about their products are they are expandable in modules up to
about 1000 ways from a single RS232 bus.
