Re: New coil woes

Hi Jim

NST are not really meant for the harsh loads imposed by Tesla coils.
You can greatly extend the life of an NST by removing all the tar and
submerging the transformer in a few gallons of transformer oil. The
transformer oil will keep the transformer cooler through convection (
keep the NST off the bottom of the tank for best circulation)
Transformer oil will stop internal flashovers from destroying the
secondary windings.

You can often resurrect dead secondary windings by cleaning them with
solvents. Once the conducting carbon has been removed from the
windings they usually start working again. Broken wires inside a
secondary are hopeless. ( keep the good secondary)

A tank capacitor that is failing can easily take out an NST (check
carefully)
