The largest wire I've spliced is #26. Started by making sure the
surviving winding is securely fastened! Just cleaned the insulation
from about a quarter inch on the ends of the wire, tinned, and soldered
the two wires side by side. Folded a piece of paper into a V, slipped
the joing into the apex of the V, put it back on the secondary and
continued winding. After the additional winding is secure went back and
trimmed the paper away for appearance sake and then varnished. Done it
three times, once to fix a break on winding and twice to repair a
secondary that had been damaged. No subsequent problems. I think the
bother of tapering the ends isn't worth the trouble, at least for wire
as small as this. Would look neater if it could be done well, but.....
