RE: Advice on Primary

Hi All
I just want to second all of the opinions that I've read. I should have asked the same question when I did my primary, but I thought it looked easy and just "winged" it. I ended up with a coil that was functional, but not at all pretty. The What I did was work harden it.... If you straighten it and then bend it back you'll get a jagged shape, it won't bend smoothly. Also I formed it by hand and then mounted it to the supports and my coil is FAR from even. Some turns are closer together than others, some are high, some are low. One lesson from this is that the primary is fairly forgiving - it's an ugly coil but it works just fine. I wouldn't worry about a solder joint. I didn't need to extend my pipe, but considering that the shape of the primary I ended up with worked fine I'd say a solder joint would do no harm if you make sure there are no sharp pointy burrs on it to leak corona.

Cheers,
Troy

I personally used notches... it just snapped into place.

I also needed to extend the roll a little, as you mentioned,
and it was just a simple matter... started off by cutting the
head from an old bolt, and threading it into the inside of
the original end (for mechanical strength)... then I threaded
the extra tubing onto the other end of the bolt, soldered the
seam with regular electrical solder, and sanded it smooth. If
you refer to the previous pic, you can see the joint at the
11 o'clock position of the outer edge.
