Bobby,

The brown potting material doesnt melt out i dont think!  Most NSTs
use asphault, which is completely black, and is usually somewhat
brittle in old transformers (and can simply be chipped away).  Newer
NSTs are starting to use epoxies and that brown rubbery type stuff you
have.  I dont think you can melt that stuff out like you can with
asphault.  Who is the manufacturer of the NST, by the way?  Probably
transco or allonson i'd guess.
