Re: Fw: Capacitor Help

Hi Malcolm,

Probably replying late (that delay thing), but I see your coil worked! (Great job!). Just thought I'd mention what I calc'd guessing at misc dimensions based on your photo's.

For the case of running inside the cage, I calc'd about 17.5 turns would be needed with your cap size or with the 15 turn primary you could also increase the cap size to about 12.5 nF.

Without the cage I think your still going to need about 16.5 turns with your current cap size. Just adding the turns may be the easiest and quickest way to get the coil in tune. It seemed that you still had some ability on your runners to do that.

Take care,
Bart

An update - I removed the primary from the circuit and found my safety gap
was just a tag to small so I opened it up just a hair to where it won't
fire. Re hooked up the primary and the safety gap is not going off but I'm
only getting about 5" sparks off the toroid to the chicken wire cage that
it's in. This is while tapping on turn 14 and a half.

If I understand how this all works my primary's frequency is to high.
I can
either remove windings off the of the secondary to increase its frequency,
or add another string of capacitors to the primary to lower its frequency.
Does that sound right?

Thanks

PS - is it just me or is there a big delay on this list?
