Another thing about the physics equation that should be mentioned is
that it neglects the end effect of the selenoid (get some leakage
toward the ends). The equation will overestimate the actual
inductance to some extent..
Not only this. Inductance formulas that don't take into account the
thickness of the wire fail for coils with few turns. I forgot this
some days ago in making a coil for RF work, and the error was so
big that I had to make another coil.
Interestingly, the very old formulations due to Maxwell and Kirchhoff
work perfectly (implemented in the Inca program).
