Where does one buy mineral oil? Walmart doesn't have it, they said
they keep ordering it but never get it. It could also be the city
it's in, as other Walmarts sell ammo and this one doesn't. Not that
the two are related in any way.....just an example of different stock
at different Walmarts.

Hi Dan,
Large animal feed store, usually available in gallon or larger sizes.

Matt D.

While feed stores are a potential source, you're going to pay roughly the same amount as you would for real transformer oil (that is, around $5/gallon, although I'll bet it's gone up with the oil barrel price). The difference is that transformer oil will be dry and have a spoilage inhibitor, while USP white mineral oil will not. The dry aspect is quite important from the insulating standpoint.

So, if you can find a distributor for transformer oil reasonably close, then you should try that first. If you're out in the boonies, where large animals are common, the feed store might be a better bet, but it's definitely a second choice.
