"Read about the Alexanderson alternator for a way of
generating high frequencies with relatively sane RPMs.
Tesla owned some alternators like these and used them
to drive his coils, so it's not a new idea.
Steve Conner"
This is one place where he has several years clear priority. His much
smaller machines were different but obviously good performers (at those
power levels) which ended up with no application. In one of my books
there's an excellent description by him of the operating principles. A
bit flowery in the language as usual but clear and accurate. Those were
the days when he built stuff and demonstrated it to the public - a great
deal of stuff.
There's still one station in the world - SAQ in Sweden - that still has
an operating Alexanderson alternator hooked up to the original big
antenna. Been out of commercial service for many years but it gets
fired up occasionally on special occasions and the signals are usually
audible along the NE part of the US.
