Two times resonance should be fine.  Did you use some method
to adjust the phase of the synchronous rotary gap?  That is
essential.  Coupling doesn't cause problems of this nature.
It's also possible that the electrode gap spacings in the sync rotary gap
are much too wide.  The electrodes should approach very closely
as they are spinning.  But not so closely that they touch or
cause a danger of course.  If the electrodes are tungsten and
they touch each other, they can break off and fly off in a dangerous
way.  It's good to have a safety shield around the rotary, and
to position some other shield in front of it so any pieces that
fly out can't possibly strike you or anyone else in the area
