All the TCs "I" ever tried to make by trial and error were miserable failures...

Now days, I calculate everything ;-))

Two things to watch that seem to be the big hitters for coils not working. Be sure the primary caps are good ones (mmc) and be sure that the primary and secondary have a chance of tuning to the same frequency. If either one of those is not right, the coil will not work well if at all.

Almost always if someone can't get a coil to run, it is either tuning or they are using something strange for a cap.
