For the record, the O.W. Landergren toroids are also fabricated as two spun
"half-shells". They are then TIG welded around the periphery, the weld bead
is ground flush, and the entire toroid is given a medium brushed finish.
When new, the welded seam is completely invisible. Over time, as the surface
oxidizes, the weld bead sometimes become slightly visible as a narrow ring a
bit darker than the surrounding metal.
The benefit of the unwelded toroids is that if they become dented, the
shells can be separated and the dent pressed out from the inside. On a
welded toroid, a dent is a dent forever.
