Unique small Tesla coil
Original poster: "Dr. Resonance" <resonance-at-jvlnet-dot-com>
After viewing Ed Wingate's real neat minature Tesla coil at his Teslathon,
I got fired up to design a small unit that you can literally tuck under
your arm and tote off to do demos at local schools, etc.
The coil will be a 15 inch long x 2 " OD fiber-tube closewound with #36 AWG
HTAI 200 degree C wire. We will coat the tube with 2 coats of Glyptal and
then wind on our lathe. Finish coating is 4 coats Dolph's AC-43. Topload
is a 1 x 3" copper toroid (unique when polished to miror finish).
Power is from a standard 6.5 kV 30 mA NST open core-coil style
(compact). MMC style cap bank formed of 9 series pcs of 0.15 uF 2 kV units
for .0167 uF at 18 kV.
Pri will be solenoid type wound on a 6 inch ID PVC tube.
Single sparkgap with 1/2 inch dia. tungsten faced electrode fitted into a 1
inch dia. brass holder for heat dissipation.
To keep the carrying weight light I'm going to place the xmfr remote (under
the table) and connect with NST wire terminated into bananna
plugs. Receptacles mount on a piece of phenolic board to separation and
insulation. Sec ground will be thru power line with a second ground
allowed to nearby water pipes, etc.
I will sell a few of the secondaries and 1 x 3 copper toroids to anyone on
the list interested. Please contact me off list.
Don't know exact performance until we get one running next week.
