Since the original poster didn't specify their desired current level
after ballasting:
I think 12 ga THHN might be good up to ~30 amps for 5 minutes.
10 ga for ~40 amps
Parallel 12ga for ~60 amps
The larger wire may cancel some of the resistive ballasting as well. I
would guess TWO spools of 12ga in parallel might be better.
