Terry,
Orientation of the magnet's magnetic field is very important. If the
central axis of the magnet and magnetic field are the same then this would
explain the null effect in your first experiments. I have observed many
different magnetic field orientations in permament magnets. Most of the
time magnet sellers will give the magnetic field orientations (see Wonder
Magnets web site). You can also grossly map the field with another small
test magnet probe or compass.
