They all look pretty grim.  Maybe it was miserably cold or it was taken
early in the morning after a latenight banquet.
I note that several are holding umbrellas and/or wearing gloves, and the
rest have their hands in their overcoat pockets.

As for being a fake... it certainly could be, especially with modern image
editing tools.  The lighting is pretty flat so there's no hard shadows to
check for consistency.  I note that the person standing just to the left of
Einstein has a coat that opens the "wrong" way. Mens' coats usually have the
buttons on the right side (if you're wearing it) and the button holes on the
left.
