UHV power lines - was: this was probably really stupid

Weazle, all,

The 500 kV lines that TVA runs here in SW Tennessee are a baundle
of three ~1" conductors with triangle shaped spacers palced every
150 ft. or so to keep them the same distance apart. I've never been
able to actually measure the length of the strung knox-disc insula-
tors that suspend the lines to the pylon towers but 13 ft. sounds
like a good guess. It seems like I've heard that they string 22 knox-
disc to insulate 500 kV. Of course many of the newer transmission
line installations use the much lighter rubber type insulators now.
