This old idea has been revived. There are now new "RF patches" available to 
speed recovery time from injuries. I'm not sure if they have found wide 
spread use yet, but it looks as if they are catching on at some places.

They can cause heating to a depth determined by the frequency. Damage
results from too much heating, therapy from "just the right amount"
(just like a hot pack, only deeper),
