I turned my winding jig by hand as well.  An I do agree that hand
winding isn't that bad.

But I had no motor on mine when I coated it so for each coat I stood
there brainless and turned it for an hour for each of the four coats.
(not fun).
Ill be putting the motor on it for the next coil.

I used iron pipe nipples for bushings on mine.

Here's what I rigged up for mine. I had my wife turn
the form for winding, and used a drill motor to keep
the poly from running. Winding by hand is no big deal,
but you'll definitely want a motor to rotate during
coating.

Though it's not visible, I used a bushing and double
nuts on each end.
