I bought a 'Variac' on ebay a few years ago.  It arrived, new, Chinese (not 
a Variac) and the workmanship was total crap.  I also have a fuzzy memory 
of it not being wired correctly.  I returned it and asked them not to 
advertise Chinese garbage under an American company's tradename.
