Hi Dave,
That "visible transformer" is so cool. I've been lugging my pole xmfr
around for years(I use an engine crane) and I can feel your pain. I would
pull a wire off the core and tie to RF ground. I ground the can of my pole
xmfr to power line ground. This capacitor couples the HV winding to ground.
I have seen many strikes to primary and the feed cables(check out Florida
Teslathon 2003 for some pictures of strikes to the feed cables). No noticed
ill effects.
