Direction is important if you are building an Oudin coil, where
the primary and secondary coil is connected to the "hot" end of the
primary coil, and the other end of the primary is grounded. The
direction has then a strong influence on the effective coupling
coefficient.
This is a good way to increase the coupling without getting into
insulation problems. See:

In a DC-powered coil, the direction also controls the polarity of
the output waveform, but as it oscillates anyway, little
observable difference is expected.
