Modular cascade is all well and good, but gettting to 100kV at 5kV a step
would require 20 of the transformers, plus a bunch of others for powering
the cascade. There's also the issue of the shunts limiting your output power
(in a cascade, the bottom transformer limits the entire stack). You'd only
get 1.5 kW out of the stack (at best). Those transformers weigh about 20
pounds each, so the stack would probably weigh in at around 500 pounds
minimum. C&H sells those transfomers for about $50, so you're looking at
$1000 minimum, plus a substantial amount for hardware and support.
Probably better to invest your $1000 in a big x-ray transformer, or just get
some HV transformers from a transformer place like T&R. Big E-beam machines
also use HV power supplies
