For really dirty (black) brass, some diluted muriatic acid is an

solution, followed by rinsing and light polishing with the usual
methods.
Too much acid turns the brass reddish. Ammonia works well too, but is
dangerous in more than small amounts Most rust removing products (oxalic
acid, I think) work well too.
