Eric,
What you are missing is that the Dr. R. transformers will have current
limiting magnetic shunts in them, similar to a neon sign transformer, thus
not requiring external ballast inductors. I presume they will have orders
of magnitude higher MTBF at full output voltage than do neon sign
transformers. And, since they will be in your own oil filled container,
they can be much lighter to lug around.
