Lighting a tube is very much like lighting a streamer - it adds a
significant power loss and capacitance to the output. I've done a
number of expts powering a small TC resonator from a low-Z signal
generator powering a coupled untuned primary. The moment you get a
tube close enough and it strikes, the resonant point changes markedly
and you can usefully retune the generator to achieve maximum tube
brightness.
