Hello Steve

I took a look at the variac on your website, and I think that
dial is marked in percents. If the dial is set at 40, then the
output is .40x240 = 96V. I'm not sure at all, but the
variac does not look like it can handle 240V, 30A. Perhaps
that ballast allowed a huge current flow during the power
arcing. I would try to find out more about that variac
and also get a different ballast.
