A spark gap with only wire terminals may tend to arc before the voltage
gets very high and will heat up rapidly causing erratic operation. Ozone
building up in the jar will also create problems. A couple of brass bolts
with rounded heads facing each other as a gap would allow the charge to
build higher before arcing and would dissipate the heat better. So as not
to appear a K'nacher, I'll let others address the remaining questions.
