Hi Steve,
A sync spark gap lets you fire at anytime during the AC cycle. As it turns
out, there is a "sweet spot" for firing time at which you can charge a
larger cap with an NST than you can with a standard static gap. A sync gap
lets you use that firing time and you can charge a 50% larger cap to get
50% more power. That sweet spot is actually after the voltage peak where a
static gap would normally fire.
