Treasure Hunting Tips (Junkyard, Scrap yard, etc.)
Original poster: "Rick Richter" <Rick.Richter-at-rlx-dot-com>
I live in Houston, Texas and assume there are numerous scrap yards and
junkyards around here. However, I've never been to one. Can some of you who
have had success scavenging useful TC parts from such places give me a few
tips? I remember going to junkyards as a kid and having a BLAST. But that
was in the days of personal responsibility instead of liability lawsuits.
Here are my questions:
1. Are scrap yards better than junkyards for TC parts? Is there a
difference between the two?
2. Do most of these places just let you walk in and start exploring? I'd
really be surprised if they do.
3. What type of place should I look for (e.g. scrap yard vs. auto junkyard)?
3. How do these places price what you find - by weight, by size, do they
guesstimate a value?
When I talk about Tesla coil parts, I generally mean transformers (MOT or
NST), low gauge copper wire or tubing, sheet copper, material for static
spark gaps, stuff like that.
Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
