I experienced similar problems, too some time ago and dismissed the
VTTC-topic for now. But I do not feel you really have to use the 833 (
though it looks really cool ).
I am located in Germany and a very common source is Oppermann electronic,
they have some transmitting tubes that should be usable here:

And once in a while I see GU81's on ebay. These are powerfull and not too
expensive, usually go for around 25EU.
