Ed,

Help me understand this one.  I connect my "lines" to both ends of my 
variac (normal operation), and I get no voltage (and no current).  Have you 
connected to one the taps on yours?  I liked the idea of not using the 
brush, but then it hit me.

I am using the whole thing, connected at both ends with the wiper not
connected.  I was using the wiper at one time and tried adjusting it at
full power and got an arc at the brush.  Now, I just leave the wiper out of
the circuit.
