I regularly carry all sorts of electronics (radios, loose PC boards, masses
of wires, etc. through airports. Sometimes they'll stop you and ask what
in the world it is. As long as your device doesn't say something like
"Remote Bomb Detonation Controller" it's probably just fine.
You'll definitely need good ID, and I wouldn't wear your grungiest
clothes. In my case, it's very possible that the NASA/JPL employee ID lets
me get away with it when I'm travelling on work. However, when I went to
England in summer 2002, I carried all my radios, lots of cables to
interconnect laptops and cameras, etc., and nobody blinked.
