The zaps you are getting isn't coming from your variac.  With insulated
shoes on, you act as a large capacitor and pick up some of the electrostatic
(DC component) space charge around your coil.  Just move your control
console back a greater distance and your shocks will stop.  This is a common
problem if you are too close.

Keep the variac case grounded and use longer power cords to your
oscillator/power supply.
