I have a suggestion. Build a better spark gap. The
spark gap is the key component as far as coil
performance is concerned. A Gary Lau style sucker gap
will probably boost your spark length, and it is
simple & cheap to build. If you don't want to put up
with the constant howl of a vacuum cleaner motor, try
an RQ type multigap made from copper pipe couplers.
Once you have your spark gap optimized, experiment
with a larger toroid. The largest top load capable of
un-assisted breakout usually gives the longest sparks.
