Terry,
I knew a fellow who did that with a 7.2kV transformer. The transformer
saturated as expected but he didn't care. The saturation caused it to
draw a lot of current and be rather inefficient. Generally transformers
will begin to saturate at 140 to 150 volts or so when the 120 volt
winding is used. I like to limit the input to about 140 volts for a 120 volt
winding, and 280 volts for a 240 volt winding.
