I have done some calculations on your coil. I come up with the primary
being tuned at 8.6 to 9.1 turns for best tune. The effective capacitance
of two stacked toroids is not the sum of the individual calculations of
each toroid. My two toroids individually calculate to 8.5 pf and 17.0
pf. The sum would be 25.5 pf. Knowing all the parameters of my system
quite well, from calculations and measurements - I input the secondary
information and the primary data with the number of turns set at the best
tap point for performance, then adjust the toroid capacitance input to
produce the capacitance value that I am actually using (solving for primary
tank capacitor). i.e., knowing everything quite well except for the toroid
capacitance - plug all the numbers into the spreadsheet and find out what
the equivalent toroid capacitance actually is. In my case, it ends up
being about 18 pf which is about 70% of the sum of the individual toroid
capacitance. I believe this 70% number agrees with other coiler's findings.
Your two toroids combined would be 33.18 pf and 70% of that would be 23
pf. If I run the numbers on your system using 23 pf for the toroid, I get
best tap point at about turn 8.6. It is not unusual to find the best
performance up maybe one half turn from here at full power - which is about
exactly where you find your best performance. I agree, I think you just
have too much toroid for that coil. If you get longest sparks with a break
out wire on the toroid (and nice performance by the way) and no or few
breakouts without the wire, I think your toroid is just a little too large.
